Sam Nelson

Beekeeper & Community Educator

Originally from outside of Philadelphia, Sam moved to the Bay Area in 2020 to engage in critical climate action work in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. With a background in education, urban forestry, nursery management, and land stewardship, Sam has learned that the interconnectedness of nature does not exclude humans. Sam believes that education is the best way to activate communities toward change, and their work in environmental fields has taught him to meet people where they’re at with kindness, enthusiasm, and grace.

Outside of conservation and education work, Sam spends most of their time outside watching the sunset, camping, biking, or basking. He draws inspiration from Grace Lee Boggs: “Transform yourself to transform the world.” By cultivating community and networks of care, humans can transform the world for the better for people and pollinators alike.

What do you love about bees?

We can learn so much from them and the ways they build and maintain community: reciprocal relationships, equity, non-hierarchy. They have perfected the society I wish to see in humanity!

If I wasn't so good at my job I would be...

making elaborate floral displays!
